The museum was created by the then Municipality of Sfakiotes and housed in the renovated building of the old Primary School of Kavalos village. The objects were exhibited and arranged by the collector Andreas Lazaris. The collector having a special interest in traditional tools and professions gathered about 2,500 related objects. A second, much smaller volume collection donated by the late Christos Katopodis which contains mainly traditional woven costumes of the region is hosted in a separate room. These two initial collections continue to enrich by adding items offered spontaneously by many residents of the nearby villages of the Sfakiotes area and from the collector A. Lazaris.

The museum collection of A. Lazaris is divided into three sections. The first and largest volume of objects regards traditional profesions. It occupies the central area of the hall. In special display stands and cases are presented series of tools refering in specific traditional professions and occupations as follows:  farmer, stonemason, tinker, barber, shoe polisher, carpenter, lumberjack, bricklayer, blacksmith, shoemaker, etc. Also is presented material evidences from local productive activities as oil production, viticulture but also religion, military life, and documents that mainly concern the daily lives of villagers.

A second section, presented in a special elevated loft in the right wing of the exhibition, hosts items on traditional Lefkada house and includes utensils, tools, textiles and a traditional oven. A third section mainly concerns the collection of Christos Katopodia that contains mainly costumes and textiles from Sfakiotes area.

Cataloging and documentation of the Museums collections was undertaken by the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre, Academy of Athens. For this reason, in the summer of 2009 on the occasion of an event held at the Museum, the then director of the Centre Aik Polymerou-Kamilaki in cooperation with municipal leaders, the collector, local scholars and friends of folklore and traditional culture, established the need for registration and documentation of valuable collections of folk art, and their further promotion through educational programs, workshops, etc. The project was undertaken by the researcher of the Folklore Centre Evangelos Karamanes, who in 2011 completed a mission in Lefkada, recording and documenting sufficient part of the Museum collection. The work was carried out with the assistance and cooperation of the collector and creator of the Museum Andreas Lazaris.

The Museum is open to the public during the summer months. Access to the Museum during his first years of operation was aassured by the then Municipality of Sfakiotes and now from the Municipality of Lefkada. Maintenance of the site is ensured by the Municipality of Lefkada.
